Shibori is one of Japan's earliest indigo dying methods, and it is said to have been brought to the country from China along with the Chinese fashion of dressing. A commonality between Gujaratis and Japanese is the tie-and-dye method of cloth printing. Shibori was one of the valuables Emperor Shoumu gave to the Buddhist monastery Toudai-Ji in Nara in the eighth century. The bandhani painters in Gujarat's Kutch and Jamnagar areas employ the same resist methods as the eight-century-old shibori art.
